Driving and physics still favour the older game
This is the point the community has never let go of. GTA 4's cars have weight, leaning into corners with suspension that compresses and crashes that carry consequences. GTA 5 made driving tighter and more forgiving, which suits its faster pace and its heists, but a large part of the playerbase still considers the 2008 handling model the better one. The Euphoria ragdoll physics tell the same story.
Scale, structure and tone
GTA 5 is the larger and more varied game by a wide margin. Los Santos and Blaine County cover city, hills and desert, and the three-protagonist structure lets you switch between Michael, Franklin and Trevor mid-mission in a way that still feels unusual. GTA 4 is smaller, greyer and much more serious. Niko Bellic's story is consistently rated as the strongest writing in the series, and Liberty City is a place rather than a playground.
Where GTA 4 shows its age
Returning players are usually surprised by how insistent the friend and girlfriend mechanics are, with calls to go bowling or drinking interrupting the pacing repeatedly. Mission checkpointing is unforgiving, so failing late often means restarting from the beginning. The PC version has a long-standing reputation for poor performance on modern hardware, and expired music licences have stripped tracks from the radio stations over the years.
The bottom line
GTA 5 (92) scores higher than GTA 4 (84), and for most people it is the right place to start: bigger, smoother, better supported and available on current hardware. GTA 4 is the one to play if you want to understand why part of the community still prefers it, and the driving alone justifies the trip. Play GTA 5 first, then go back.
